Description
Ngamba Island offers an intimate experience with chimpanzees, allowing close observation in a semi-natural habitat. Its scenic beauty and focus on conservation make visits educational and impactful.
Ngamba Island is a chimpanzee sanctuary on Lake Victoria, about 23 kilometres southwest of Entebbe, Uganda. Reachable by boat from Entebbe, Ngamba Island is a 45-minute speed boat ride or a 90-minute motorized canoe ride from the mainland.
The island provides a natural habitat for rescued and orphaned chimpanzees that are unable to return to the wild. The sanctuary focuses not only on the welfare of chimps but also on education and conservation initiatives. Guides provide in-depth explanations about the challenges chimpanzees face in the wild, such as habitat loss and poaching.
Visitors can take guided tours to observe the chimpanzees and learn about these primates and the conservation efforts in place to protect them. This includes watching feeding sessions and seeing them up close in a semi-natural environment.
Aside from chimpanzee trekking, the island offers bird watching, swimming, and other leisure activities as part of the visit.
Visiting Ngamba Island is a rewarding experience for those interested in wildlife conservation and provides valuable insights into the efforts to protect one of our closest relatives in the animal kingdom.
