Mt. KILIMANJARO HIKING TOUR: MARANGU ROUTE

DAY 1: Arrival in Moshi to Marangu Gate
On the first day of your adventure, you will arrive in Moshi, Tanzania, where you will be greeted by your tour guide. After a brief introduction and orientation about the trek ahead, you will be transferred to the Marangu Gate, which serves as the starting point for the hike. Upon arrival at the gate, you will complete necessary registration procedures and enjoy a packed lunch. The trek begins with a gentle ascent through lush rainforest, where you can observe diverse flora and fauna. The hike on this day typically covers around 8 kilometers (approximately 5 miles) and takes about 4-5 hours to reach Mandara Hut, your accommodation for the night.

DAY 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
After breakfast at Mandara Hut, you will continue your ascent towards Horombo Hut. This segment of the trek is characterized by a transition from rainforest to moorland vegetation. The trail offers stunning views of Mawenzi Peak as you gain altitude. The distance covered today is approximately 12 kilometers (about 7.5 miles), taking around 6-7 hours to complete. Upon reaching Horombo Hut, situated at an elevation of about 3,720 meters (12,200 feet), you will have time to rest and acclimatize before dinner.

DAY 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut
This day is dedicated to acclimatization, which is crucial for successfully summiting Kilimanjaro. You will spend the day exploring nearby areas such as the Mawenzi Ridge or hiking towards Kibo Hut for a few hours before returning to Horombo Hut for overnight stay. It’s also an excellent opportunity to take photographs of the breathtaking landscapes surrounding you.

DAY 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
On Day 4, after an early breakfast, you will set off towards Kibo Hut. This leg of the journey involves a challenging ascent through alpine desert terrain with minimal vegetation as you approach Kibo Peak. The distance covered today is roughly 10 kilometers (about 6 miles) and usually takes around 6-8 hours due to steep sections and altitude gain; Kibo Hut sits at approximately 4,700 meters (15,400 feet). After arriving at Kibo Hut in the afternoon, you’ll have time to rest before preparing for your summit attempt later that night.

DAY 5: Summit Attempt and Descent
The final day begins very early in the morning (around midnight) as you prepare for your summit attempt on Uhuru Peak (the highest point on Kilimanjaro). You’ll start hiking under starry skies with headlamps illuminating your path. The trek from Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak covers about 6 kilometers (approximately 3.7 miles) and takes around 6-8 hours due to steep inclines and high altitude challenges. Once at Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters or approximately 19,341 feet), you’ll have time for photos before beginning your descent back down to Kibo Hut for a brief rest before continuing downwards toward Horombo Hut for overnight accommodation.
