2 days Ol Doinyo Lengai mountaineering tour

2days Ol Doinyo hike, part of the volcanic system of the East African Rift Valley which produces natrocarbonatite lava. This mountain has been experiencing occasional volcanic eruptions.
Day 1: Arusha - Lake Natron
Our driver will pick you up from your hotel in the morning and drive you to Lake Natron. The drive is quite long and you will reach Lake Natron Camp some time after lunch. At the same time, the scenery along the way is picturesque and you have the opportunity to see the locals, including Maasai tribesmen, as well as some African wildlife. After checking in, a guide will take you on a tour of the Ngare Sero Waterfall. The path goes through a gorge and sometimes you have to cross the stream. We therefore recommend that you wear sandals or something similar so that you don't have to constantly take off your shoes. After a drive to the lakeshore where you have the opportunity to capture the magnificent scenery on camera, you return to the lodge for dinner and rest.


Day 2: Trekking to Ol Doinyo Lengai Volcano - Arusha
At 1:00 a.m. your driver will take you to the base of Ol Doinyo Lengai Volcano where you will begin the climb. The sure-footedness on the volcano's slopes can be treacherous, especially in the dark, so follow your guide without overtaking him. The hike is strenuous and takes between 7 and 12 hours, depending on your fitness and pace. The gradient is steep, so it is best to take a short break every 100 meters in altitude to acclimatise. It's best to take a breakfast break on the way to the summit to fortify yourself for the rest of the climb to Ol Doinyo Lengai. At the edge of the crater you have reached a height of 2,960 m. Here you can actually hear the Ol Doinyo Lengai lava flow inside the crater of "Mountain of God". The descent is easier and you may be tempted to walk faster. However, this is the time when most injuries happen, so be careful! It's also a good idea to swap your fleece for a sun hat after sunrise to avoid heat stroke. Our driver will be waiting for you with cold drinks upon your return to the base of the mountain and will drive you back to camp where you can have a quick shower and lunch before returning to Arusha.
