Duration:

Description
Experience the process of producing local Tanzanian coffee on this half-day tour in Arusha on a family-run farm. You’ll plant, harvest, grind, roast, and even taste your own local cup of coffee.
We welcome you to the Kingstone Asilia Family Farm in the green, peaceful outskirts of Arusha. Here we will teach you all about the history of coffee, how it came to Tanzania, and guide you through the traditional processing methods that we still use today. Coffee is Tanzania's largest export crop, and the country is known for producing some of the best. Don't believe us? Come and try it!
After collecting you from your accommodation in Arusha in our private car, we will take you to Kingstone Asilia in Moivaro. You'll pass through the farm on the way to our wooden nature hideaway, where you'll take a seat and we'll talk you through the history of coffee and the first stages of coffee as a seed. You'll have the chance to ask any questions before we begin a short walk around the farm (don't worry, there is plenty of shade on the farm, so it won't be too hot!).
On our walk, we'll show you some traditional Tanzanian medicinal plants and tell you the fun stories of how they are used. Depending on the season, you'll also get the chance to plant a small coffee plant in our plantation. Finally we'll reach the mature coffee trees and working together we will be pick the ripe coffee cherries, and fill a basket ready for processing.
Heading back to Kingstone Asilia via the farm workers houses, you will use our traditional hand-powered pulping machine to remove the pulp from the coffee cherry, and leave your harvested beans to dry in the sun. We'll take some pre-dried beans and show you how to pound them with a fun song and dance to remove the outer layer (hulling). Next its time for roasting! We roast our beans over a small charcoal fire, before a second round of pounding to produce ground roasted coffee. And finally, it is time to drink a fresh cup of your own processed coffee, complete with a traditional Tanzanian sweet peanut snack. :)
Our tour concludes with a delicious home-cooked vegetarian lunch, prepared by our own chef, with fresh ingredients bought that day in the market, or harvested from the farm. You may also get the chance to try some local banana beer if you dare!
After the tour you will have the opportunity to buy coffee beans or ground coffee as gifts for friends and family, paintings produced by local artists, bracelets and other Tanzanian souvenirs. We also sell honey produced by the female empowerment organisation that we founded and continue to support. When you are ready to leave, we'll drop you back in town or to your accommodation.
Love it so much that you don't want to leave? You can even stay at our hostel just next door (Aroma Home), or visit any other time for our 'bar in the bush' and restaurant. We welcome all visitors :)
