Description

Relax, swim and dive in the gorgeous Kikuletwa Hot Springs. Then return to Kingstone Asilia for a delicious lunch and coffee tour, where you'll process your own coffee from seed to cup and drink it!
Your tour begins with our pickup service from central Arusha - from your accommodation or clock tower. (we can also pickup from Moshi, or further hotels for an additional fee for the extra fuel/time. Please discuss with us!).

Next we will take you on the 1.5 hr drive to Kikuletwa Hot Springs, a.k.a. Chemka. The drive will be approximately 45 minutes on a smooth tarmac road, followed by 45 minutes on a dirt track, through semi-arid landscape until suddenly we reach the hidden and lush hot springs - a magical oasis hidden by lush greenery. The water of this natural spring is turquoise blue and crystal clear and invites you to a refreshing dive over 6 meters depth. Tiny fish swim in the water and offer the opportunity for natural massages, and a rope swing into the water gives the opportunity for an adrenaline-filled photo shoot. For those who are less confident swimmers, you can rent floating rings for just 10000tsh, or sit and relax on the submerged rocks at the edge of the hot springs.

We can chill here for a few hours, before beginning the drive back to the Kingstone Asilia Family Farm. Here you'll have a delicious home-cooked vegetarian lunch, prepared by our own chef, with fresh ingredients bought that day in the market, or harvested from the farm. You may also get the chance to try some local banana beer if you dare!

Then begins the coffee tour. We'll talk you through the history of coffee and the first stages of coffee as a seed. On our walk around the farm, we'll show you some traditional Tanzanian medicinal plants and tell you the fun stories of how they are used. Finally we'll reach the mature coffee trees and working together we will be pick the ripe coffee cherries, and fill a basket ready for processing. You will use our traditional hand-powered pulping machine to remove the pulp from the coffee cherry, and leave your harvested beans to dry in the sun. We'll take some pre-dried beans and show you how to pound them with a fun song and dance to remove the outer layer (hulling). Next its time for roasting! We roast our beans over a small charcoal fire, before a second round of pounding to produce ground roasted coffee. And finally, you will drink a fresh cup of your own processed coffee, complete with a traditional Tanzanian sweet peanut snack. :)

After the tour you will have the opportunity to buy coffee beans or ground coffee as gifts for friends and family, paintings produced by local artists, bracelets and other Tanzanian souvenirs. We also sell honey produced by the female empowerment organisation that we founded and continue to support. When you are ready to leave, we'll drop you back in town or to your accommodation.

Love it so much that you don't want to leave? You can even stay at our hostel just next door (Aroma Home), or visit any other time for our 'bar in the bush' and restaurant. We welcome all visitors :)
