Description

Explore Lausanne's Old Town, blending ancient charm and modern cosmopolitanism. Marvel at the Musee des Beaux-Arts, stroll historic streets and discover the city's sports and artistic prominence.
We will walk through the ups and downs of Lausanne's streets and centuries of History, in a quest to form your own story of the Old Town. This city is a well-conceived mixture of ancient and modern, as well as a very cosmopolitan example of the Swiss lifestyle. It rises elegantly in terraces on three hills above the north shore of Lake Geneva (Lac Léman) in Switzerland's French-speaking region. Lausanne is a city of sports, being the headquarters of the Olympic Committee and of the Court of Arbitration for Sport, having also the Swiss Film Archive as well. The city is officially titled the “Olympic Capital”.
Pass the Musee des Beaux-Arts (Fine Art Museum), also known as the Palais de Rumine. It houses a modest but impressive art collection of the likes of Cézanne, Degas, Renoir, and Matisse. See the Town Hall, built in the 17th century by the Lausanne architect Abraham de Crousaz. Walk the Escalier du Marché, a long-covered flight of stairs leading to the terrace in front of the cathedral. One of the best-known sights in town. Visit the Rue du Bourg, now a pedestrian shopping street, and once one of the main roads of old Lausanne, with architecture from the 17th and 18th centuries. Wander through the Flon Quarter, the heart of Lausanne, to find the city’s ultra-contemporary new art zone. From a Roman colony to the Middle Ages and until today, journey through this fantastic hilly city of the Savoy Alps.
