Description

Embark on a culinary journey in Basel! Learn to make Swiss cheese fondue, enjoy a classic aperitivo with Spritz or Swiss white wine, and create your own authentic Wähe with fresh fruits.
Picture yourself arriving in Basel, a historic Swiss city nestled along the Rhine, where the air is still filled with the essence of Switzerland, even though the landscape is not mountainous. You're welcomed into a warm, rustic kitchen where the evening promises to be a feast of Swiss tradition and hospitality.

The night begins with a rich, authentic Swiss aperitif. The table is laid out with an array of local delicacies, starting with thin slices of Bündnerfleisch, the famous air-dried beef from Graubünden. The meat, cured to perfection, is tender, flavorful, and pairs beautifully with fresh Basler bread, Swiss butter, and tangy pickles. Alongside, you'll find artichoke hearts, semi-dried tomatoes in olive oil, green olives, and a selection of artisanal Swiss cheeses like Appenzeller and Tête de Moine, each bringing its own unique taste and texture.

To complement these flavors, we serve a selection of wines from a local producer who crafts a variety of exceptional wines, including Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Traminer, Merlot, and many others. Each wine is carefully chosen to enhance the flavors of the charcuterie and cheese, adding a perfect touch to the evening.

As you enjoy these delights and savor the wine, the conversation flows easily, setting the tone for a relaxed and joyful evening. But this is just the beginning.

Next, you're invited to gather around the table for the main event: a traditional Swiss cheese fondue. A pot filled with a blend of melted Gruyère and Emmental cheese, mixed with a touch of white wine and garlic, bubbles gently in the center. You spear pieces of crusty Basler Bürli bread and dip them into the creamy, rich cheese, savoring the comforting warmth with each bite. To accompany the fondue, you'll also taste Swiss cream, adding an extra layer of indulgence. For a little extra kick, there's Kirschwasser—cherry brandy—that you can drizzle over your bread before dipping, or enjoy as a sip on the side.

As the fondue pot is scraped clean, the host brings out the grand finale: a freshly baked "Wähe," a traditional Swiss fruit tart. Made with fruit provided by us, perhaps apples, plums, or apricots, the tart is a perfect balance of buttery crust, tender fruit, and creamy custard, topped with a scoop of ice cream. The kitchen fills with the sweet, inviting aroma as it's served, and everyone takes a moment to appreciate the simple yet exquisite dessert.

To close the evening, you’re offered one last glass of Kirschwasser or Grappa (organic), a perfect way to finish this rich culinary journey. The warmth of the brandy lingers, complementing the flavors of the cheese fondue and the fruit tart, and leaving you with a deep sense of satisfaction and contentment.

This is more than just a meal—it's a true Swiss experience, where the quality of local ingredients, the tradition of communal dining, and the joy of sharing good food and wine with friends come together in perfect harmony.
