Start your tour with a visit to the Negombo Fish Market. See the day’s catch being laid out on enormous mats made of coconut fiber. Watch as the fishermen use the heat of the sun to remove all moisture from the fish and extend their shelf life.
Then, head to the wet market to see fresh seafood being sold. Ranging from tuna, mackerel, squid, sardines, and shark, the market is said to be closed on Sundays when the city’s predominantly Catholic population heads to church.
Next, visit the Anglican Church of Negombo. Consecrated in 1880, the church is built in the Gothic revival architectural style. A stone cross of small size is fixed on each the ridge-tiles at the top.
Continue to the Roman Catholic St Mary’s Main Street Church. The church is a landmark edifice and one of the largest cathedrals in Sri Lanka.
Finally, take a boat ride on the Dutch Canal. Cruise along the waterway and take in the beautiful views of the surrounding area.
