Description
How many people in the world have managed to make their house bravely "resist" the eruption of a volcano? And how did its owner overcome this challenge?
Vicente calls his house "La Resistencia". And it is only by knowing its history and seeing the landscape that has built up around it that one can understand its name. Among the stories of the victims there is a lot of "resistance". And this resistance flourishes, against all odds, fertilised by "hope", as hope can’t be stolen from them.
The eruption of the Tajogaite volcano was a birth of new land, just like the Canary Islands were born. But for the people of the Aridane valley, it also meant having to bury entire lives. Where once there were homes, businesses and plantations, there now lies a barren wasteland, black as the night sky. And silence. As if the memories that lie there cry out to be heard, so they don’t fall into oblivion, leaving those who approach it speechless.
Many conflicting situations converge in an eruption. Its destructive force became extreme gentleness when the eruption stopped. Each newly born rock is impossible to replace, like every home and memory that it swept away in its wake.
This is the story of the place where the incandescence of solidarity and hope continues to illuminate and nourish the hearts of those who lost everything. And with you, and in you, its story walks.
Join us for a closer look at the house closest to the volcano, which withstood the eruption of 2021. It was buried under metres of ash and its owner managed to keep it alive.
We will follow a path that starts at the south viewpoint of the volcano, and we will walk to the house of La Resistencia. During the walk we will explain how the eruption was experienced in this area and we will be able to visit the house.
