Description
Discover the Batalha Monastery, one of the most culturally important landmarks of Portugal’s monarchy and world renowned for its original Gothic and Manueline style architecture.
Explore the Batalha Monastery, a hidden architectural gem in the Iberian Peninsula, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983.
Step back in time and learn about the rich history of this Dominican monastery, built in 1385 after the victory of the Portuguese over the Castilians at the battle of Aljubarrota. Built with funding from King João I, the vast complex, which is also a royal pantheon, is considered the most significant example of Portuguese Gothic and Manueline style.
Marvel at the colorful array of Portuguese medieval stained glass windows, which can be admired from the impressive columns of the Chapel. Look up and gaze at the impressive central nave of the church, standing at an impressive 32.5 metres and resting on eight columns on either side. Next, head to the domed Chapter Hall and walk through the collection of carved cloisters that give access to the monastery's dormitory, dining room, and kitchen.
