7 hour Hike Pico Mountain and Piquinho 2351 meters

Hike to the Summit, Piquinho, of the Highest point of Portugal ! This is a intense hike of 7 - 9 hours, a great experience for adventurous travelers that love the Nature and Hiking.
It is a pleasure to invite you to join us on this adventure to the summit of Pico Mountain! This is the most iconic and memorable experience in the Azores , perfect for those who are in good physical condition , even without any mountaineering experience.

Our official meeting point will be Casa da Montanha 1200 meters where we will give a briefing to the entire group, we will check that everyone has the necessary equipment and is adapted to the climbing day and we will receive our locators to begin our journey of approximately 7 hours to 2351 meters and return.

The official trail is approximately 8km long and is entirely built on volcanic rock with an average slope of 30%, promising challenging differences in level. The return trail is practically the same, with some variation above 2000 meters.
We will start on the western side of the mountain and the first stage of the trail lasts between 20 and 30 minutes up to 1300 meters. It is important that all group participants complete this part without difficulty. An intense change in breathing pattern and/or lack of balance are warning signs, as this is a sample of the difference in level and the type of terrain that we will have in the next few hours on Pico Mountain.

The next stage, between 1300 and 1700 meters, does not present much difficulty as it is an area where we walk horizontally to the south, but the trail between 1700 and 2000 meters will have very slippery sections, with loose rocks and unevenness that will require our full attention.

Arriving at 2200 meters we will rest in the crater for a few minutes before attacking the summit, the famous “Piquinho”. This lava cone is intimidating at first glance. It is positioned inside the crater and has permanent fumaroles that won't let you forget that you're at the top of a volcano.

The Piquinho climb lasts approximately 30 minutes the guides know each rock and will drive it calmly and safely in this final stage as well.

Finally the incredible feeling of reaching the Top of Portugal! Here we will have all the time to breathe deeply and enjoy the moment in the best possible way, whether contemplating, relaxing or taking lots of photos.

The descent has fewer stops to keep the leg muscles always active and also because during this phase motivation tends to decrease. The steep incline will make you and your knees remember the climb for several days, especially when climbing stairs.

Back at Casa da Montanha, our starting point, the feeling of mission accomplished that will accompany you for the rest of your life, knowing that you can always do much more than you imagine!

* Access to the Pico Mountain Natural Reserve has a maximum carrying capacity of 320 people per day and 160 people simultaneously, for this reason we emphasize the importance of making the complete reservation with personal data as soon as possible to guarantee access .

Cancellation is not possible. If you cancel it anyway or not show up on the excursion you will still be charged the full price of the activity and the money you paid will not be refunded.
