Description
Step into colonial Lima's past with a visit to Casa de Aliaga, one of its oldest structures, erected in the same year as the founding of the Peruvian capital.
Our itinerary begins at Peru Square, where Casa de Aliaga stands, one of Lima's oldest edifices.
This mansion's history traces back to the era of Francisco Pizarro, when the conqueror allocated plots of newly founded Lima to his men, including Jerónimo de Aliaga y Ramírez, who, at just 16 years old, ventured to the Indies and became one of Peru's conquistadors. Since its construction in 1535, the Aliaga lineage has resided in this house, mirroring the age of Lima itself.
Throughout Peru's history, Casa de Aliaga has played a pivotal role, providing refuge during the Republic for figures like President Miguel Iglesias, Rear Admiral Aurelio Garcia, and Generals Manuel Velarde and Antonio Bentin.
During our tour, we'll explore the opulent chambers of Casa de Aliaga, delving into the family's 17-generation legacy. We'll admire the tiled living room and bedrooms adorned with Louis XVI-style furnishings, French carpets, and Japanese vases. From the grand dining room's expansive windows, guests can glimpse the courtyard and its 19th-century English fountain.
A highlight not to be overlooked is the chapel, its walls once adorned with silver plates, lost during looting in the War of Independence.
Concluding our nearly three-hour exploration of Casa de Aliaga.
