From Cusco: Vitcos and Vilcabamba Day Trip

Embark on a day trip from Cusco to the district of Vilcabamba. Visit the Vitcos archaeological complex, see the colonial Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, and enjoy a local lunch.

Begin your day with a pickup from your hotel in Cusco at 2:00 AM. Cross the Sacred Valley of the Incas and part of the Abra Malaga Route, which has peaks towering at 14,160 feet (4,316) high. Descend through the Lucumayo Valley and cross the Vilcanota River via the Chaullay Bridge.

When you arrive at the village of Huancacalle, have some free time to have the breakfast you've brought with you. From here, start a hiking route up to the Vitcos archaeological complex, where the monarch Manco Inca II was assassinated. As you gaze at beautiful views of the Vilcabamba valley, situated at 8,860 feet (2,700 meters) above sea level, discuss the history of this mysterious place.

In Vitcos, see its pink stone constructions, which is why this place is also known by the name Rosaspata. Afterward, hop back on the bus and pass through Lucma so you can see the colonial Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, built in the Baroque style. According to historians, this temple was built over an Inca oratory, and materials from the archaeological complex of Incahuarakana were used. See its bell tower and mural paintings.

Lastly, stop at a local restaurant so you can have lunch on your own before returning to Cusco, where you'll arrive at your hotel at 9:00 PM.
