On this tour, we will see the Sumbay Cave Paintings, created by early humans over 8,000 years ago during the Lithic period, which show the evolutionary history of humans in Peru.
At 8:00 am, we will leave Arequipa and head to Sumbay. Our first stop will be the Salinas and Aguada Blanca Reserve, a protected area known for its stunning landscapes and diverse wildlife. After exploring the reserve, we will head to Patahuasi. Here, we will have the opportunity to enjoy Inca infusion, a traditional tea made from coca leaves, which is essential for preventing altitude sickness. Next, we will continue to the town of Sumbay. Upon arrival, we will embark on a 20-minute hike to reach the Sumbay Cave Paintings. These ancient works of art, created over 8,000 years ago, provide a fascinating insight into the lives of the region’s earliest inhabitants. The cave art is an important archaeological site, offering evidence of early life in the area. After exploring the cave paintings, we will visit the town of Sumbay itself. In Sumbay, we will explore the train cemetery, a unique and intriguing location perfect for photography. Additionally, we will visit the local church, which will add to our cultural experience of the city. Next, our journey will take us to the Tocrapampa wetlands. Here we will have the opportunity to observe alpacas grazing freely in their natural habitat, giving us an excellent opportunity to appreciate the local fauna and the scenic beauty of the wetlands. We will return to Arequipa at 4:00 pm, thus concluding our tour full of historical, cultural and natural landmarks.
