Discover the Hells Gate/Tikitere Geothermal Reserve, one of the most active in New Zealand. Enjoy a self-guided walk of the spectacular reserve, located approximately 15-minutes drive from central Rotorua.
Hells Gate boasts New Zealand's largest active mud volcano, the Southern Hemisphere's largest hot water falls, and even examples of land coral. See boiling hot pools and erupting waters with temperatures in excess of 100 degrees Celsius. Discover steaming fumaroles, hot water lakes, sulphur crystals and deposits.
Learn about Hells Gate’s extensive history independently or join an interactive guided tour, available daily at 10:30 AM or 2:30 PM. A complimentary shuttle service picks up from central Rotorua three to four times a day (seasonally) with scheduled drop offs.

• Open daily except Christmas Day, opening hours vary seasonally
• Allow 1-hour for self-guided walk or 1.5-hours for guided tour
• The Park is an all-weather activity, wet weather can make the geothermal park activity more noticeable
Hell’s Gate is located just outside of Rotorua’s city center. From the city, simply travel east on SH30. Approximately 5-minutes past the airport, turn right towards Whakatane. Hell’s Gate is 3 km down this road.
When should I book?
To guarantee availability book as soon as possible. Early booking is worth consideration especially if you planning the trip during high season like public holidays or weekends.
Cancellations
This excursion you can cancel with no cost up to 48 hours before the start of the trip. If you cancel it after 48 hours or not show up on the excursion you will still be charged the full price of the activity. Being late on pick-up or departure will be considered as not showing up.
