Discover the breathtaking beauty of New Zealand's wilderness with the Siberia Experience. Departing from Makarora, this unforgettable journey begins with a scenic 25-minute (approx) flight over the Southern Alps within the World Heritage-listed Mt Aspiring National Park. Marvel at pristine glaciers, plunging waterfalls, and hidden lakes from your window seat.

Your flight ends with a landing in the remote Siberia Valley, deep within the rugged Southern Alps and within the Mt Aspiring National Park. This is a spectacular place and true New Zealand wilderness. Your pilot will give you a briefing on the hike section before you set off on foot and meander through the stunning natural landscape you have reached.

Your adventure continues with a 7km unguided hike through the valley, traversing native rainforest and river valleys. The trail is clearly marked and takes approximately 2.5-3 hours to complete, requiring a medium level of fitness. Enjoy the serenity and raw power of nature as you make your way to the beautiful Wilkin Valley. There are both up-hill and down-hill sections on this well defined dirt track that is maintained by the NZ Department of Conservation.

The final leg of your journey is a thrilling 30-minute jetboat ride along the braided Wilkin River, bringing you back to your starting point. For those seeking more, extended flight options and overnight stays at the Siberia Hut are available. Join us for an unforgettable exploration of New Zealand's untouched wilderness!

Siberia Experience departs from Wonderland Makarora Lodge 5944 Haast Pass-Makarora Road, Makarora West. It is approx 1 hours self drive from Wanaka or 2 hours from Queenstown. Please phone before leaving your accommodation for a weather check. The later you can call us the more accurate the weather call will be. You will return to Wonderland Lodge approx 4 hours after you board your aircraft - times may vary - Siberia Experience is co-ordinated by Southern Alps Air.
The flight is with Southern Alps Air, the Hike is a Freedom Walk on a Department of Conservation trail/track and the jetboat operator is Wilkin River Jets. Southern Alps Air reserves the right to cancel, or alter any part of the experience due to safety, weather or any conditions if deemed necessary on the day.

The Siberia Experience provides transport both in and out of the Mt Aspiring National Park for you with the take-off and jet boat arrival at the same location.
Please ensure you bring everything you will need for your own safety and personal comfort during a day in the outdoors. Please bring a waterproof layer and listen to instructions from our team as weather conditions can change quickly in the backcountry.
FYI, the flight is operated by Southern Alps Air and the Jetboat is operated by Wilkin River Jets. The walk is a freedom walk on a Department of Conservation maintained track. A $21 per person Department of Conservation fee is included in your trip fare. This goes directly back to Department of Conservation for conservation and maintenance efforts within this area of the Mt Aspiring World Heritage National Park. Please be aware there is no cell phone coverage during the activity.

When should I book?

To guarantee availability book as soon as possible. Early booking is worth consideration especially if you planning the trip during high season like public holidays or weekends.


Cancellations

This excursion you can cancel with no cost up to 24 hours before the start of the trip. If you cancel it after 24 hours or not show up on the excursion you will still be charged the full price of the activity. Being late on pick-up or departure will be considered as not showing up.
