Description
The Upper Mustang Trek is a challenging 14-days adventure in Nepal's remote, culturally rich Upper Mustang region. It offers unique landscapes, ancient Buddhist culture, and stunning mountain views.
The Upper Mustang Trek is a journey into a remote and culturally rich region of Nepal. The Upper Mustang was once a forbidden kingdom, which is why it retains its districts culture and traditions. The landscape is unlike anything else in Nepal, with arid valleys, deep canyons, and dramatic rock formations.
During trek you will also visit Lo Manthang, the ancient capital of Upper Mustang, a walled city with a rich history. The Trek is located at a high altitude (3,000m to 3,800), so acclimatization is crucial. The terrain can be challenging, with some long days of trekking and windy conditions. The Upper Mustang is a restricted area, so a special permit is required and also an Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) permit is required 'cause it lies in Annapurna Conservation Area. The Upper Mustang Trek offers an unique experience to desert-like landscape, ancient Tibetan Buddhist culture, traditional villages, stunning mountain views along with religious sites.
The journey begins for the heart of the nation right at Kathmandu before heading towards Pokhara. The trailhead lies at Jomsom, from where we head towards the sacred site of Kagbeni. Many devotees head to Kagbeni to perform final rites for the departed souls of their ancestors during the months of September and October. The Upper Mustang Trek enters the barren landscapes as we begin our trek to the hamlet of Chele continuing to reach Syangboche. With barren mountains guiding our way we continue towards Lo Manthang crossing the hamlets of Ghami and Tsarang on the way. The next day gives us ample time to explore Lo Manthang including premium locations like the King’s palace, monasteries, and also to interact with the local people. The trail gradually retraces towards the hamlet of Drakmar. Gradually beginning our descent takes us to Ghiling and then onto Chhuksang which is also the exit point of Upper Mustang. While the hamlets often seem to be detached from each other, each one of them makes up for a part while tracing the lands in the Upper Mustang Trek.
