Buddha, also known as Siddhartha Gautama, was born in Lumbini, Nepal, in the 6th century BCE. Lumbini is located in the foothills of the Himalayas, near the border between Nepal and India. According to Buddhist tradition, Buddha was born under a sal tree in a garden, and his mother, Queen Maya Devi, gave birth to him while standing up and holding onto a branch of the tree. The site of Buddha's birth is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a popular pilgrimage destination for Buddhists from around the world.
