The history of the city of Kathmandu dates to ancient times, with archaeological explorations indicating that the city and 2 sister towns in the Kathamandu Valley, Patan and Bhaktapur, were the oldest settlements. They have been traced to the period between 167 B.C. and 1 A.D.
Kathmandu is Nepal’s capital and largest city, situated at an elevation of approximately 1,400 meters in a bowl-shaped valley surrounded by 4 major mountain peaks – Shivapuri, Phulchowki, Nagarjun, and Chandragiri.
On this full-day tour, you’ll learn about Kathmandu’s history that covers a period of over 2,000 years. Thamel is the old part of the city and features narrow streets lined with shops, and numerous nooks and crannies that are home to restaurants, offices, and more shops. Durbar Square, a World Heritage Site, is a fascinating place to visit, with its numerous Hindu temples, statutes of Hindu deities, and the Palace of Kumari, the living goddess.
Pashupatinath, another important monument, is the world’s largest Hindu temple. Considered the most significant for Hindu followers, it attracts numerous pilgrims and colorful Sadus. Many Hindus choose to be cremated on the banks of the Bagmati River.
There are 2 significant Buddhist gompas in Kathmandu, Swayambhunath and Buddhanath, which are also World Heritage Sites. Nagarkot, the highest point in the range surrounding the Kathmandu Valley, about 35 kilometers from the city center, offers unprecedented views of the Langtang range and some of the giants beyond such as Annapurna, Manaslu, Cho Oyu, and Shishapangma.
