Mt. Jannu Himal now officially known as Kumbhakarna Himal lies 11km to the West of the summit of Mt. Kanchenjunga. Though lower, it is a very difficult peak, with a summit pyramid that is steep on all sides. The first ascent and and standard route is a complex and difficult, though not extreme, route up the Southeast Ridge, from the Yamatari Glacier. Neighboring peak Jannu East 7,468 meter, was unclimbed as of 1997. On the climbing side, no experience is necessary; however you must be familiar with alpine environments and must understand the risks that camping and climbing above the snowline pose. Kumbhakarna is a large and steep peak in its own right, and has numerous challenging climbing routes. Previous trekking experience or long route hiking experience is desirable. Jannu Himal is called Phoktanglungma, literally "mountain with shoulders" (Phoktang means shoulder and lungma means mountain), in the Limbu language, and is sacred in the Kirant religion.
