La culebra - Hierve el agua; is a tour designed in one of the valleys of Oaxaca, it starts in Santa Maria del Tule and ends in Tlacolula. It is perfect for children, seniors, and beginners.
For those of advanced level who like challenges it is possible to reach Hierve el agua by bike, be aware that you will have to climb 6 kilometers with slopes of 17% which requires good physical condition and be mentally prepared to do it.
After picking you up in Oaxaca City, we will drive 35 minutes to Santa Maria del Tule where, while the guides prepare the bikes, you can visit the famous Tule tree, the thickest tree in the world. Most of the route is through farm fields, crossing small Zapotec villages surrounded by mountains where you can get a glimpse of the daily life of the rural communities of Oaxaca.
Our first stop is in Teotitlán del Valle, a Zapotec town famous for its wool weavers, we will visit Josefina Méndez's tapestry gallery where she and her family will give us a demonstration of the traditional art of this town. It is very interesting to observe how they dye wool using and mixing dyes obtained from fruits, plants, flowers and, above all, cochineal.
After our break in Teotitlán del Valle we will continue our bike tour through farming fields and some agave plantations; this road has some short climbs and descents that are fun to ride. We will finish our bike tour near Tlacolula de Matamoros, where we will put the bikes on the rack and once ready, we will drive to Hierve el Agua.
Advanced option*: we continue riding through Tlacolula which is the largest town in this valley until we reach the dirt road that will lead us to Mitla, then Xaaga and it is here where the hard part of the challenge begins, 6 kilometers of ascent and then descent to San Isidro Roaguía where Hierve el agua is located.
Upon arrival in Hierve el Agua we will enjoy a delicious meal prepared in a traditional way on a clay comal and after lunch, we will visit the petrified waterfalls where you will have enough time to visit the waterfalls and swim in the natural pools.
We return to the city of Oaxaca after having comfortably enjoyed all the activities. On the way back to the city (if we are still on time) we can stop at a Palenque to see how mezcal is made and taste its different presentations.
