Explore Rundale Palace in Pilsrundāle, approximately 50 miles (80 kilometers) south of Riga, and discover one of the most ornate palaces of the former Duchy of Courland.
Built by the Russian court architect, Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli, who also designed the Winter Palace in St, Petersberg, Rundale Palace is a vast warren of more than 130 apartments and 3 decorative statehalls, including the glittering Gold Hall, serene White Hall, and Grand Gallery banqueting hall.
Explore the history of the palace and see collections of dishes, furniture, and period paintings that reveal the story of the Duchy of Courland. Free leaflets are available in English, German, and Russian in each hall of the museum, with detailed descriptions of the exhibits.
Stroll around the palace and gardens, which include a magnificently landscaped French Garden, and fragrant Rose Garden. Refreshments are available to buy in the restaurant and café, housed in ornate rooms that will make you feel like an noble of the Duchy.

• If there is enough time on the way back, you can stop at Bauska Castle, built by the Livonian Order. This was the last castle built by the Crusaders in the chain of Orden forts from Estonia to Lithuania
