Kisumu was established in 1901 as an alternative to Port Victoria as a terminus for the Uganda Railway. The city was originally called Port Florence, but reverted to its original name, Kisumu, in 1903.

Landing point for the first flight
Kisumu was the landing point for the first flight in East and Central Africa. The British used amphibian planes to transport passengers and mail between Southampton and Cape Town.
Nickname
Kisumu is nicknamed "Mboka", which comes from the Luo word sumo meaning "a place of barter trade".
