Showa Shinzan Bear Ranch（about 60 minutes）: On December 28, Showa 18 (1943), a strong earthquake occurred near Mount Usu on the shore of Lake Touyako. The result was a volcanic eruption that caused the ground to rise rapidly to form a high mountain. The volcanic activity lasted until September 10, the 20th year of the Showa era (1945). There were 17 more active volcanic activities during the two-year period. To commemorate this phenomenon of volcanic activity, the new volcanic mountain with an elevation of 398 meters was designated as a special natural monument in 1957 and named Showa Shinzan. It is still a growing ""new mountain"", and white smoke can be seen constantly erupting from the reddish-brown mountains.
The Bear Ranch, located near the entrance of the Showa Shinzan Cable Car, houses about 100 pure-bred Hokkaido brown bears. Brown bears are the largest wild mammals in Hokkaido.You can feed Brown bears in the bear ranch. The bears who see the food will stand up and wave to tourists.
