Visit the Capuchin Crypt Museum in Rome to learn about the history of the Capuchin friars. Explore the museum's 8 rooms to discover the simple lifestyle, closeness to the poor, and spirit of brotherhood that characterize the religious order.
Start your visit to the museum, located on Via Veneto, a few steps from Piazza Barberini, and attached to the baroque church of Santa Maria della Concezione. The museum collects and exhibits some significant aspects of the Capuchin friars in general and of Lazio in particular.
The first section of the museum is dedicated to the convent, commissioned by the Barberini family and completed in 1631 according to the design of the Capuchin architect Fra Michele da Bergamo. The next two sections present the Capuchin order and spirituality through the images and stories of some saints.
The fourth section displays vestments, objects of liturgical use, and artifacts of everyday use. The fifth section is dedicated to the painting depicting Saint Francis in meditation, perhaps made by Caravaggio specifically for the Capuchin convent.
The sixth and seventh sections tell the story of the spiritual, cultural, missionary, and artistic activity of the order in the twentieth century and around the world. At the end of the exhibition, the eighth section introduces the final and highly evocative place that closes the visit to the museum: the Crypt-Cemetery.
