Discover the beauty of Naples with an “urban trekking” path, easy to follow at any age.
The walking tour is the ideal way to go and visit Naples from uphill down to the historic center. Start from the Vomero Hill, where you’ll enjoy a most beautiful view of the Gulf of Naples, and walk down to the Historic Center, the real heart of town, passing through the ancient steps, built in the 14th century.
The tour starts with a spectacular view from the marvellous terrace of St. Martin’ Charterhouse, where you can enjoy an enchanting and breathtaking view over the entire Gulf of Naples from its amazing gardens.
If closed, the Charterhouse will be replaced by St. Elmo Castle, the highest point of Naples from which to admire a 360 degrees view on the city.
The tour continues going down the quiet stairs of Pedamentina, one of the most ancient footpaths of the city. It is made of 414 steps and it connects the hillside of Naples to the heart of town, the historic center, and has panoramic and evocative view. As you go down you can see ancient houses and catch a glimpse of the most beautiful view of the Gulf and of Vesuvio.
As you walk you will see the B&B of Mr Pasquale Nocerino: he is a violin player and his wife, Giovanna, is a ballet dancer. This is the neighborhood where Baudelaire lived for some time and where Marguerite Yourcenar set her tale “Anna, soror…”. From the Pedamentina you can also see the most famous Spaccanapoli, the Decumano Inferiore way which really cuts the town in two. As you go further walk along the lively, authentic, colourful Market of Pignasecca and finally get to the historic center of the town. It is the biggest in Europe and is listed as a “World Heritage Site” by UNESCO.
Take a stroll and visit Spaccanapoli, visit its craft shops, walking by the main Piazzas, among folklore and ancient tales. Visit the Church of Gesù Nuovo and discover fascinating legends and the magic of the mysterious alchemical symbols on its facade, before entering in the Church of St. Clare. Go into the alley of San Gregorio Armeno and enter the historical craft shop of the Ferrigno family, where the most ancient Neapolitan Crib is handmade. The day will come to end with a pleasant stop where you will be able to taste the real Neapolitan espresso accompanied by the typical Sfogliatella or Babà (excellent local pastries).
