Description
The Basilica of San Severo was built in 1573 by the Archbishop Carafa and rebuilt in 1680 by the architect Dionisio Lazzari. The chapel of "Bianchi" is an art treasure with numerous paintings.
The Basilica of San Severo is one of the most important churches in the Sanità district.
The interior of the Basilica is in the form of a Latin cross, with three chapels on each side, and artworks by, among others, Leandro Carcano (The Annunciation), Paolo De Matteis (the Madonna del Rosario with Dominican saints), Pietro Lambertucci ( Saints Peter and Paul).
Inside the Basilica there is the "Cappella dei Bianchi", a real treasure with works by artists such as Giordano, Fracanzano and Vaccaro, while along the side walls 12 canvases tell stories of Saint Anthony. The vault is embellished with four large canvases: The Eternal Father, The Virgin and Child with Saints, The Immaculate Conception and St. Francis.
In 2018 was placed here the work "Veiled Son" by the scutor Jago.
The work is carved in a single block of marble and depicts a child covered by a veil, which tells of the death of all the innocents of our time. "The Veiled Son" is inspired by the Veiled Christ by Giuseppe Sammartino, who celebrates the sacrifice of a man who dies for the community. Jago's work, on the other hand, fixes contemporary reality in marble, forcing us to confront one of the images that often leave us indifferent.
In addition, the ticket allows you to visit the Catacombs of San Gennaro and San Gaudioso at a special reduced rate.
