Description
Enjoy a 1.5-hour glacier walking tour of Sólheimajökull glacier. You'll see some striking ice sculptures, waterfalls and beautiful topography along the way.
A glacier walk is a great way to experience Icelandic nature and a tour to Sólheimajökull glacier tongue is an ideal way to spend the day. On the 2-hour drive from Reykjavík, you will pass right under the famous Eyjafjallajökull volcano that caused so much trouble in the spring of 2010.
Just east of the volcano lies Sólheimajökull, an outlet glacier from Mýrdalsjökull, Iceland’s fourth-largest glacier. As you explore the wonderland of ice sculptures, ridges, and deep crevasses, you will learn more and more about these disappearing giants. Experienced mountain guides will teach you how to use basic glacier equipment for this tour. Please note that ice climbing is not included.
On the way back to Reykjavík after the exhilarating glacier hike, you will stop at the two beautiful waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss.
Seljalandsfoss is part of the Seljandsá river, which has its origins in Eyjafjallajökull glacier. What makes this waterfall so famous and interesting is that you can walk behind it. It is recommended that you bring either a raincoat or a waterproof coat along if you want to walk behind it. Skógafoss, another famous Icelandic waterfall, is the starting point of the Fimmvörðuháls walk over to Þórsmörk. The waterfall was also used in the films Thor: The Dark World and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
