From Reykjavík: 3-Day Tour of the Wild Westfjords

Enjoy the experience of a lifetime on this 3-day guided tour of the wild Westfjords, departing from Reykjavík. You’ll see the breathtaking beauty of one of the most unspoiled areas of Iceland, filled with exciting places to visit, where nature reigns supreme!

Day 1

Start your Westfjords adventure with a memorable road trip from Reykjavík, passing Borgarnes and through the Viking heartlands of West Iceland to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Take photos of the basalt columns at Gerðuberg, the pretty church at Rauðamelskirkja and the fascinating Bjarnarhöfn Shark Museum before we catch the ferry from Stykkishólmur.

“Baldur” is a comfortable car ferry with several viewing decks (and a restaurant) to soak up splendid views of Iceland’s second-largest fjord on the 2-5-hour journey to the Southern Westfjords. Then you’ll visit a beautiful white sand beach at Barðastrandarsandur before we take the high mountain pass to the little town of Patreksfjörður for an overnight stay.

Day 2

Enjoy incredible Westfjord vistas as you explore the towering cliffs at Látrabjarg, a perfect place for bird spotting. Look out for the Garðar shipwreck on the way! This is the westernmost point in Iceland, where thousands of seabirds (including puffins!) make their way every summer.

Take a stroll on the multicolored sands of Rauðisandur, and enjoy views of Fossfjörður waterfall and the iconic “A-House.” Then, gaze in wonder at Dynjandi, the wedding cake-shaped cascade with its seven-step “waterfall ladder.” Finish your second day with a great night out in Ísafjörður, the capital of the Westfjords.

Day 3

Spend your day mesmerized by the astonishing views as we journey along the northern coast of the Westfjords on the “Seven Fjord Road” from Ísafjörður. Looking north, you’ll see the famous wildlife preserve of Hornstrandir and the Arctic Ocean beyond.

Keep an eye out for Arctic foxes, glaciers, seals, bizarre rock canyons, turf-roofed huts and much more. Soak up the fantastic panoramic views from the lookouts at the tip of each fjord – we’ll stop where the pictures will be the best! Finally, we’ll stop at the Viking heritage museum at Eiriksstaðir before returning to Reykjavík.
