Based on research, this ancient volcano was an active volcano about 60 million years ago. Mount Nglanggeran was formed from a seabed volcano that was uplifted and then became land millions of years ago. This mountain has large towering rocks so it is usually used as a hiking trail. The peak of the mountain is Mount Gedhe at an altitude of about 700 meters above sea level, with a mountainous area reaching 48 hectares.
In addition to its natural beauty, Mount Nglanggeran also has folklore that has developed in the community. Nglanggeran Hill is said to be a place to punish villagers who carelessly destroy puppets. Nglanggeran comes from the word nglanggar which means in Indonesian to violate. According to a story hundreds of years ago, local villagers invited a dalang to hold a harvest celebration party. However, there are some villagers who do reckless things. They try to destroy the puppets belonging to the puppeteer. The dalang was furious and cursed the villagers who destroyed the puppets belonging to the puppeteers into puppet figures and were banished to Nglanggeran Hill.
Currently, several large rocks which, according to local people’s stories, were once believed to be used for hermitage. Locals say that according to belief, Mount Nglanggeran is guarded by Kyai Ongko Wijoyo and the puppet figure Punokawan. On the eve of the Javanese New Year or Friday Kliwon, some believers choose to meditate at the top of the mountain. On Mount Nglanggeran, a statue similar to Ken Dedes has also been found.
