Description

Discover the beauty of Crete's countryside on a guided tour of Spili village. Visit the Maravel Garden, the Folk Museum of Spili, and the Hagion Pnevma church.
Explore the diverse array of flora at Maravel Garden, hike to the Hagion Pnevma church, and visit the Folk Museum of Spili. End your tour with a visit to Kafenion o Raftis, a tailor's cafe.

Begin your tour with a stop at Maravel Garden in Spili village, located at the south central part of Rethymno. Stroll along meandering paths, bordered by carefully curated plant beds, and discover the botanical wonders that thrive in this tranquil space.

Maravel Garden provides an ideal setting for relaxation and recreation. Find a quiet bench to read a book, have a picnic in designated areas, or simply absorb the beauty of your surroundings. The garden is designed to cater to both solitude seekers and those looking for a shared outdoor experience.

Next, embark on a hiking journey that will lead you from Spili to the location of Hagion Pnevma church. Along the way, enjoy the Cretan countryside and its beautiful landscapes. Ascend to new heights and savor incredible panoramas from the elevations of the trail.

Whether over hills or across mountainous terrain, the paths will offer stunning views that will rejuvenate the spirit of adventure and leave an indelible impression on your soul. Create unforgettable memories and explore the wonders of nature during your journey.

Discover the secrets of Crete's past and culture at the Folklore Museum of Spili. Explore the rich cultural heritage of Crete through the exhibits it hosts. With a variety of traditional costumes, household items, and exhibits representing the daily life of the people of Crete, the Folklore Museum offers a journey into the past and the traditions of the region.

At the end of your tour, visit Mr. Giorgos (Raftis) Kafenion. It's an old-fashioned café, with straw chairs and metal tables that seem to have seen a lot. As you walk inside, you sense the same atmosphere. What catches your eye in the back, near the kitchen, is a counter with a sewing machine.

"I used to be a tailor," says Mr. Giorgos. "I made Cretan trousers, European suits, even uniforms for officers and policemen. Now I only do repairs, alterations here and there. People nowadays prefer to buy ready-made clothes from stores in the city."

The café-sewing shop in Spili has been here for 45 years and appears to be the last genuine remnant of the village's old charm. Its operation is successfully continued by his son, Vangelis. Have a lot of time to relax and drink some Raki which is served, as at the past, with refreshing cucumber, freshly cut potatoes, cheese, olives, and crispy breadsticks.
