Kunsthalle Bremen: Tradition and modernity
The Kunstverein was founded in Bremen in 1823. Over 170 years ago, it built the Kunsthalle Bremen, not far from Bremen's market square, the first independent building for a civic collection in Germany. Today, the Kunsthalle is still privately supported by the Kunstverein in Bremen and is one of the most important and beautiful museums in Europe. The diverse collection spans works of art from seven centuries.
The collection
From Dürer to Monet and Picasso to Turrell - 700 years of art history in one place.
In the course of the 200-year history of the Kunstverein and Kunsthalle, a collection of outstanding paintings and sculptures as well as one of the largest and most important cabinets of engravings in Germany was created: a collection that was shaped by the bourgeois character of the Kunstverein and the commercial tradition of Bremen.
More about the Kunstverein in Bremen
As a lively part of the cultural landscape, the museum sees itself in the spirit of freedom and cosmopolitanism not only as an exhibition venue, but also as a place of encounter and debate on current themes and developments. Through the extensive historical collection and an active program of exhibitions and events, past and present, Bremen and the world are brought together in a productive dialogue. The aim is to arouse enthusiasm for the visual arts in all sections of the population and age groups, as well as in people of different cultural backgrounds, and to create individual approaches. To this end, the Kunsthalle has been in an active process of opening up and diversifying since the 2000s.
