Description
Starting at Belleau Wood a sacred ground for the US Marine Corps and the US cemetery, Hill 204, the Croix Rouge Farm, the Oise-Aisne American Cemetery and finally the crash site of Quentin Roosevelt.
- Visit the center of the Lucy-le-Bocage village and see the 2nd Division monument. Walk across the village and see the main place of the 6th Marine Regiment,
- Next, tour the Bouresches village. Talk about the attack on the village by the Marines, the heroic action of Captain Duncan and the Medal of Honor receiver- Lieutenant Osborne, US Navy, who is today buried in the Aisne-Marne Cemetery,
- Walk in the Belleau wood to see the remains of this battle, including foxholes and trenches.
- Explore Belleau village and the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery to visit the grave of Lieutenant Osborne and the Chapel. On the wall, we can read the names of the missing Marines and Soldiers.
- Then, make a stop at the German Cemetery and see the panorama view of the battlefield.
- Go to Hill 204 to see a beautiful monument and look at the panorama view to understand why it was a strategic point for the Germans and Allies. Then, tour around its interpretive center.
- Witness the remains of the fortified Croix Rouge Farm, occupied by the Germans and learn about the action of the 42nd Division and the offence made by the 167th Infantry Regiment from Alabama, who lost a lot of men during this attack. Look at the monument which was dedicated in memory of their sacrifice.
- Next, head to the Oise Aisne American Cemetery and stop on the grave of the famous poet Joyce Kilmer from the 165th Infantry Regiment, 42nd Division, who was killed in action on July 30th, 1918.
- Lastly, look at the Quentin Roosevelt Fountain offered by the Roosevelt family to the village in memory of their son.
