Description

Throughout our tour of Marseille's historic Old Port and Le Panier neighborhood, we'll explore the overlapping layers of history from its colonization by the Greeks to the present day.
Welcome to Marseille! Marseille has been a thriving hub of cultural exchanges since the Phocians (Greeks from Turkey) landed in France's oldest city. We'll begin by observing the archeological ruins dating back to antiquity as Greek sails gave way to Roman roads, and then mosey through the 17th Century as royal power from Paris imposed absolute rule under Louis XIV. Throughout the tour we'll discuss how Marseille's architectural heritage reflects these changes and the legacy of France's Colonial Empire, whose plunder built modern Marseille. Contemporary Marseille weaves together all of these threads, ancient and modern, to form a contemporary tapestry. And we'll observe the profound urban changes that began to shape Marseille when it was European Capital of Culture in 2013, and the city shed its gritty image for steel and glass. But Marseille's stones are old, and steel is still finding a hard home here among the rocks and scrub brush.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

We'll meet next to the large Marseille sign next to the exit to the Vieux Port métro exit, just feet from the water and the morning fishmongers. We'll be just next to a large aluminum canopy, Norman Foster’s "Shadow", which should provide us with a little shade!
