Embark on a day trip to the Tigray churches of Abuna Yemata Guh, Maryam Korkor, and Daniel Korkor. Discover the stunning architecture and history of these churches with the help of a local guide.
Begin your day with a walk to Abuna Yemata Guh, a church perched on the side of the Gheralta massif. Climb using foot and hand holds chipped into the sandstone rock. Walk along narrow ledges with sheer drops to the side. Reach the church by walking out on a ledge 1 meter wide with a 200-meter drop to the left. At the entrance, find a small cave and a wooden door built into the rock.
Continue to Maryam Korkor, the most impressive architecturally of the 3 churches. Admire a huge, high ceiling supported by 12 free-standing pillars. Wonder how the architect managed to carve so high from the ground.
Finally, visit Daniel Korkor before driving back to Mekele.
