Toompea Hill (Cathedral Hill), situated in the heart of Tallinn, Estonia, is a historic and culturally significant limestone hill. Rising about 20-30 metres above the surrounding areas, it spans approximately 400 by 250 metres. This hill is a key part of Tallinn’s Old Town, which is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Historically, Toompea Hill has been a centre of power and governance in Estonia. It is home to the Toompea Castle, which houses the Estonian Parliament (Riigikogu) and the iconic Tall Hermann tower. The hill’s history dates back to the 10th or 11th century when the first stronghold was built by the residents of the ancient Estonian county of Revala.
In Estonian folklore, Toompea Hill is said to be the burial mound of the legendary hero Kalev, erected by his grieving wife, Linda. This mythological significance adds to the hill’s cultural importance.
Today, Toompea Hill offers stunning views of Tallinn and is a popular tourist destination. Visitors can explore its historic buildings, enjoy panoramic views from various viewing platforms, and immerse themselves in the rich history and culture of Estonia.
This tour shows you all the main sightseeing objects that are here, but on top of it, we will lead you to the best panoramic and photo-taking spots that this city has to offer. When this tour is finished, we recommend continuing to explore Tallinn and walking the “Tallinn Old Town” tour.
