Description
Enjoy a unique trip from Barcelona to explore the picturesque medieval village of Besalú, hiking the crater of the Santa Margarida Volcano in Garrotxa, and touring the city of Girona.
We will arrive at the Old Bridge of Besalú; which is believed to have been built in the 11th century.
During the tour we visit the ecclesiastical monuments found in the town, such as the churches of Sant Pere, Santa Maria and Sant Vicenç, which alternate Romanesque and Gothic elements. On the other hand, we will visit the old Jewish quarter, where our tour guide will explain the customs related to the Hebrew rituals.
Then we will visit the Natural Park of the Volcanic Zone of Garrotxa, a place of exceptional scenic value thanks to the thick forests of beech, oak and holm oak. The "Diamond Head" of Catalonia, or also called Santa Margarida Volcano. We will make a short hike through a beech forest, 1 hour long, 3 km with a small difference in height of 150 m. It is a phreatomagmatic volcano, the explosion of which opened a wide circular crater, inside which is the Romanesque hermitage that gives its name to the volcano.
After these activities, we will take a break in a typical Catalan farmhouse, where we will have time for lunch.
On our way back to Barcelona, we will pass through the city of Girona. We will start our tour at the Stone Bridge (Pont de Pedra), an iconic place to enjoy the panoramic views of the Onyar River and the famous colorful houses that line its banks. From there, we continue to the Barri Vell, Girona's old town, which is a maze of narrow cobblestone streets full of history. Here, we will visit the Cathedral of Girona, known for its impressive baroque facade and for having the widest gothic nave in the world. And of course the setting for the movie Game of Thrones.
We will finish the tour walking along the walls of Girona. This walk will offer you spectacular views of the city and the surrounding area. The walls are accessible from various points in the old town and provide a unique perspective of how the city defended itself in times gone by.
Finally, we will close this adventurous day by returning to Barcelona.
