Description

Enjoy a guided tour of the walls of Dubrovnik and learn about the city's rich military history. Take in breathtaking views of the city, old port, and fort as you walk the entirety of the walls.
Meet your local tour guide on the square in front of fort Revelin, near Ploče city gate. Get to know your fellow travelers and then follow your guide to the city walls! Once you buy the ticket at the entrance, you'll climb up and immediately enjoy the first breathtaking view of the Old harbor. Listen to your guide as they explain the importance of maritime activities, seafaring and trade in the old times of the Dubrovnik Republic and how important it was to have the Old harbor protected from enemy attacks.

Discover fort Revelin and how it guarded the eastern approach to the Old town for centuries. Walk along the northern stretch of the walls and learn about medieval warfare, bows and arrows, stone boulders and siege tactics. Stop on one of the towers and hear about the relations Dubrovnik Republic had with the Ottoman Empire. As you will have learnt on this tour, Dubrovnik always put diplomacy in the first place and rarely resorted to actual fighting.

The climb on top of Minčeta fort will surely be one of the highlights of your tour: take-in the views of early-morning Dubrovnik basking in the warm sun! Listen to your tour guide explaining about the great Italian architect Michelozzi who contributed to the construction of this remarkable fortress. Learn about the old gun foundry and just how many cannons there used to be on the city walls.

Mid-way along the walls you'll have a brief photo stop; the view of the Stradun, Dubrovnik's famous main street, will be amazing! Continue along the western stretch of the walls and hear about forts Lovrijenac and Bokar and how they protected the Pile gate. Did you know that Lovrijenac fort at certain places has walls up to twelve meters thick?

Walk along the southern stretch of the medieval walls of Dubrovnik, and discover both the oldest as well as the youngest section of the wall. Learn about the historical relations that Dubrovnik Republic had with Venice and the longstanding rivalry between the two competitors in maritime trade.

This two-hour small-group tour covers the military history of the old Dubrovnik Republic and explains in-depth the construction of the walls and the city's defenses. It also focuses on the diplomatic efforts to ensure the survival of the ancient city-state of Dubrovnik in between the political giants of the time - Venice and the Ottoman Empire.

Your tour guide will gladly answers your questions and help you to gain a better understanding of the city's complex history. Upon completing the full circle on the city walls you can choose to get off the walls at the same place where you entered to continue discovering the Old town, or, if you want, go on another lap, now enriched with the knowledge of the place!
