Temple of Heaven
The Temple of Heaven, or Tiantan, is a sprawling complex that was once the site of important ceremonial rituals conducted by the emperors of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It was used for annual ceremonies to pray to Heaven for good harvests and rain. The complex is divided into two parts: the inner part, which contains most of the structures, and the outer part. Key structures include the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, the Imperial Vault of Heaven, the Circular Mound Altar, and the Abstinence Palace. The Temple of Heaven is renowned for its remarkable architecture, which reflects ancient Chinese cosmology where heaven is round and earth is square.
Visitors can explore the serene grounds, admire the intricately carved buildings, and even walk along the Danbi Bridge, which symbolizes the path to heaven. The park also hosts the Divine Music Administration, which was responsible for the music and dance performers during the ceremonies.
