Description

The Summer Palace, a royal garden of the Qing Dynasty, formerly known as the Garden of Clear Ripples, is located at No. 19 Xinjiangongmen Road, Haidian District, in the western suburbs of Beijing. It is built around Kunming Lake and Longevity Hill, using the landscape of West Lake in Hangzhou as a model and drawing on design techniques and the atmosphere of gardens in Jiangnan. It is the largest and most well-preserved imperial garden, often referred to as the Museum of Royal Gardens. The garden covers 3.009 square kilometers, with water surfaces making up about three-quarters of the total area, comprising Longevity Hill and Kunming Lake. There are over a hundred scenic buildings, more than twenty courtyards, and over three thousand ancient structures, covering nearly 70,000 square meters. The garden is home to over 1,600 ancient trees. In December 1998, the Summer Palace was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
