After the Ottoman conquest, Bosnia had become a country with a Muslim majority. Only ten years after Sultan Mehmet II al Fatih conquered Constantinople (Istanbul), he entered Bosnia Herzegovina where he established Ottoman rule. Sarajevo, was once one of the most prosperous cities in the Ottoman Empire. The rising social and economic standards that came with the Ottomans attracted not only Muslims from other regions but also Christians and Jews. They settled and lived together harmoniously. Because of that Sarajevo became known as ‘The Jerusalem of Europe’. Tiny allies, colourful Persian-like carpets, detailed copper souvenirs, Muslim call for prayer, smell of coffee, walking through these streets of Sarajevo you might forget that you are in Europe. You will see the oldest religious temples in the city, some of them are among the oldest in Europe.
