Category:
Country: Bosnia-Herzegovina
Duration:
03:00 hours
Description
Sarajevo was under siege from Serbian forces for almost four years, the longest blockade of any capital city in modern warfare
The siege of Sarajevo continued for 1,425 days and 11,541 people, including 1,601 children, lost their lives. The daily campaigns of shelling, targeting the civilian population, were complicated by the blockade of humanitarian aid convoys and the severance of any connection with the rest of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the world. To survive, Sarajevo residents dug the Tunnel of Hope. The Tunnel of Hope was under the control of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, used to distribute food, medical supplies, and weapons for defence.
