Follow in the footsteps of the great painter, René Magritte, on a 3-hour walking tour in Brussels. Explore the city's landmarks and learn about the life and work of the surrealist artist.
Meet your guide in front of the Musée Magritte and set off to explore the city. Visit his homotown, Jette, and the Parcours des Mosaiques, the Éclosion murale, the Jardin de Médiation, the Fontaine de Magritte, and the La fleur en papier doré.
Learn about the life of the artist, who was born in 1898 in Lessines, near Charleroi. Both his parents worked in the textile industry. He started to take drawing lessons when he was 12. He studied at the Fine Arts Academy in Brussels and established himself in the capital for the rest of his life.
To earn his living at the beginning, he worked in graphic design and advertising. Throughout the years, Magritte became part of the Surrealist movement and became friends with artists with the same vision as him.
However, unlike many of the surrealists, Magritte was not interested in the psychoanalysis and psychology of art but rather focused on ideas, visuals, symbols, and enigmas. Discuss the Surrealist movement in further detail later in the visit.
Magritte's painting style often embraced a neutral aesthetic, characterized by simple colors, images, and shapes. And there could be a very good reason for that. Surprisingly enough, he did not like painting. Indeed, what Magritte enjoyed were the ideas that stemmed from his mind. The action of painting was boring to him but it was the only way to express his ideas.
