Description
Embark on a journey to discover one of Germany’s most historic cities. Explore the medieval Old Town, the Regensburg Cathedral, the Old Stone Bridge & the Porta Praetoria dating back to 2nd century.
Start your tour in the Old Town of Regensburg where you will see UNESCO World Heritage sites. Here, you will see wealthy merchant houses. You will be in the largest medieval region of the city which is one of the top attractions in Germany consisting of approximately 1500 buildings and cityscapes. It is also a part of the Green-Belt area.
Next you will see the Cathedral of St Peter's and the Old Town Hall dating back to the 13th century. At the town hall you will also see the Town Hall tower, the Gothic Imperial Chamber building. The cathedral is renowned for its fascinating Gothic architecture and is one of the famous landmarks of the state. You will also be able to view incorporation of French Gothic architectural themes since the architect under whose supervision the new cathedral in 1280 was built, had been trained in France.
As we continue, you will walk on the Stone Bridge used by Louis VII of France and his army to cross the Danube. Its south end is believed to have been the site of an ancient city gate. It was formerly a wooden bridge approximately 100 meters long and was built by Charles the Great (who was the king of Franks). However, due to being vulnerable by the incoming floods and traffic it was dismantled and a new stone bridge was built here. This bridge took eleven years to complete.
Finally, you will visit the Porta Praetoria which will take you back in time. It dates back to the 2nd century and is built in Corinthian architectural style. It is one of the two remaining Roman gates towards the North of the Alps, the other one being the Porta Nigra in Trier.
