Jinhuishui art originated during the Yuan Dynasty and flourished in the Qing Dynasty. Contrary to what the name suggests, the "ash" in Jinhuishui does not refer to actual ashes but to the damaged state of paintings and calligraphy after being eaten by insects, burned, torn, or stained.
Jinhuishui involves simulating and recreating these broken pieces on silk, resulting in a beautiful, chaotic aesthetic. This art form, constructed from fragments of paper and scrolls, is considered the ancient predecessor of contemporary collage art, using two-dimensional materials to represent three-dimensional space.
The process is complex, requiring artists to be skilled not only in poetry, painting, and calligraphy but also in seal carving and the study of ancient texts and artifacts. Furthermore, the artist must accurately restore historical details, making each brushstroke with precision.
Jinhuishui was on the brink of being lost but was recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Shandong Province in 2013. Today, Jinhuishui is being passed down and preserved, blending with modern art forms and appearing on umbrellas, fans, clothing, bookmarks, and phone cases, becoming part of the "Guochao" trend that fuses ancient and modern aesthetics.
