Yonghegong Lama Temple, located in the northeastern corner of Beijing, was initially built in the 33rd year of Emperor Kangxi's reign (1694) during the Qing Dynasty. It was originally the residence of Kangxi's fourth son, Prince Yongzheng (later Emperor Yongzheng), known as the Prince Yong Mansion. In the third year of Yongzheng's reign (1725), the mansion was converted into an imperial palace and renamed Yonghegong Lama Temple. After Emperor Yongzheng’s death in the thirteenth year of his reign (1735), his coffin was temporarily placed there, leading to the change of the temple’s main hall roof tiles from green to yellow. In the ninth year of Emperor Qianlong's reign (1744), Yonghegong Lama Temple became a lamasery, serving as the Qing government’s center for managing Tibetan Buddhism nationwide.

As the highest-ranking Buddhist temple in the late Qing Dynasty, Yonghegong Lama Temple’s architecture uniquely blends Tibetan Buddhism with traditional Chinese architectural features, showcasing cultural elements of Han, Manchu, Mongolian, and Tibetan ethnic groups. The temple complex consists of three exquisite archways and five main halls, covering an area of 66,400 square meters and containing over a thousand rooms. Key structures include the Zhaotai Gate, Bell Tower, Drum Tower, Yonghe Gate, Grand Hall (Hall of Great Buddha), Yongyou Hall, Hall of the Wheel of the Dharma, and the Pavilion of Ten Thousand Blessings. The layout of the courtyards gradually narrows from south to north, while the height of the halls increases in sequence, creating a grand architectural layout that is both towering and majestic.
