Bell and Drum Towers sit at the northern end of the central axis of Beijing. Initially built in the Yuan Dynasty (1206–1368), they were the time-telling center of Beijing through the Yuan, Ming (1368–1644), and Qing (1644–1911) dynasties. There used to be 25 drums in the Drum Tower. The bell cast during the Yongle era (1403–1424) of the Ming Dynasty weighs 63 tons, thus is known the “King of Ancient Bells” of China. Time was told by “a dusk drum and a morning bell.” Bell and Drum Towers in Beijing has been the model of the kind from ancient China and topped the others as Bell and Drum Towers in the capital city. They boast a long history of time-telling and the largest drum and bell across the country. Also, the two buildings are unique in their layout, Bell Tower slightly north to Drum Tower.
