In Kaunas you can discover the real Lithuania.

Most buildings in the Old Town Center of Kaunas are from the 15th and 16th centuries and they are great places where you can get some historical information on art and admire architectural designs. Even if you are not interested in museums, visiting this part of Kaunas is one of the essential things you should do in Kaunas. It has a little museum and an art gallery inside, and you can find out a lot more about Kaunas town during medieval times. Kaunas has been preserved through the years, and it serves today as both a town hall and museum, which is well worth visiting.

Kaunas Castle is still a fine structure you can tour around in the old town. In 2010 and 2011, the castle was rebuilt to the one that you can see today and is now a museum and viewpoint that you can visit. Visitors are now allowed into the remaining part of the Kaunas castle to view exhibits about the castles ruins and to find out more about Kaunas Castles history.

The cobbled streets of this neighbourhood lead you directly to the town hall and the Ninth Fort. Kaunas town hall is also the main plaza in the Old Town, and it is here, during summer, that you must undoubtedly take a place in one of the open-air bars to enjoy evening events.

If you are starting off on a trip to Kaunas city, it is recommended visiting this magnificent building on top of Freedom Avenue. Located on Town Hall Square at the heart of Kaunas’s compact Old Town, this museum is an excellent choice if you are wondering what to do in the second largest Kaunas city. Much street art is commissioned throughout the city, and there is also an annual street art festival called Nykoka, which adds a lot of nice pieces to Kaunas every year.

Visit Kaunas if you love history, architecture, the variety of museums, great food, or just looking for a nice city in Lithuania to explore. Of course, you could just spend one day in Kaunas, or you could visit Kaunas as a day trip from Vilnius, but I believe that there are too many attractions to see in Kaunas that it takes a little bit of extra time to explore all of them. Kaunas has beautiful architecture, quirky museums, and historical sites that make it worth every day of your trip. Kaunas is charming not just because of its historic buildings, leafy parks, and host of museums, but because of its hip and widely spread coffee culture.
