Day 1: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave Camp
Elevation: 1,600 m (5,250 ft) to 2,850 m (9,350 ft)
Distance: 11 km (7 miles)
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours

The trek begins at the Umbwe Gate, located in the southern part of the mountain. After registration, the trail ascends sharply through dense rainforest. The path is steep and rugged, winding up through lush jungle to the Umbwe Cave Camp.

Day 2: Umbwe Cave Camp to Barranco Camp
Elevation: 2,850 m (9,350 ft) to 3,900 m (12,800 ft)
Distance: 6 km (3.7 miles)
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Heath and Moorland
Leaving the rainforest, the trail becomes steeper as it climbs up a narrow ridge flanked by towering cliffs. The vegetation becomes sparser, transitioning to heath and moorland. The day’s hike ends at Barranco Camp, situated in a valley below the imposing Barranco Wall.

Day 3: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Elevation: 3,900 m (12,800 ft) to 4,035 m (13,230 ft)
Distance: 5 km (3.1 miles)
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
The day begins with a climb up the Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical scramble. After ascending the wall, the trail traverses ridges and valleys, including the Karanga Valley, before reaching Karanga Camp.

Day 4: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Elevation: 4,035 m (13,230 ft) to 4,640 m (15,220 ft)
Distance: 4 km (2.5 miles)
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
From Karanga Camp, the trail joins the Mweka Route before continuing up to Barafu Camp. This is a short but steep hike, and you'll arrive at Barafu Camp in the early afternoon. You will rest here and prepare for the midnight summit attempt.

Day 5: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak, then descend to Mweka Camp
Elevation: 4,640 m (15,220 ft) to 5,895 m (19,341 ft) and down to 3,080 m (10,105 ft)
Distance: 17 km (10.5 miles)
Hiking Time: 12-15 hours
Habitat: Arctic to Rainforest
The summit push begins around midnight. The climb is steep and demanding, taking you to Stella Point on the crater rim and then to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating your achievement, you will descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest and then continue down to Mweka Camp.

Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Elevation: 3,080 m (10,105 ft) to 1,630 m (5,380 ft)
Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles)
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
On your final day, you will descend through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. After signing out at the gate, you will receive your summit certificates and be transferred back to Moshi.
