Explore the Labugama Kalatuwawa Forest Reserve on a day trip from Colombo. See the Seethawaka Botanical Garden, or Seethawaka Wet Zone Botanic Garden, and the Seethawaka Museum.

Start your day with a pickup from your hotel in Colombo. Travel to the Labugama Kalatuwawa Forest Reserve, which is a short distance from Colombo. The reserve protects two reservoirs that are the source of the capital Colombo’s water supply.

The reserve covers the highest region in the Colombo district, and its forested slopes are dominated by vegetation typical of tropical rainforests. Labugama Kalatuwawa Forest Reserve offers one of the most convenient locations close to Colombo for bird watching with numerous endemic and rare species found in its environs.

Endemic species that can be encountered here include the green-billed coucal, grey hornbill, Ceylon spurfowl, and Ceylon trogon, while rare species to look out for would be the Indian scimitar babbler, Indian three-toed kingfisher, brown-capped pygmy woodpecker, and the Tickell’s blue flycatcher.

Next, visit the Seethawaka Botanical Garden, or Seethawaka Wet Zone Botanic Garden, which is a botanical garden located in Sri Lanka. The garden mainly serves as a research area and a conservation area for threatened and vulnerable endemic plant species in the Sinharaja Rain Forest region.

Improving export floriculture, ex situ conservation of wet lowland plants, and bamboo cultivation are also promoted in this garden. The garden was opened to the public in late October 2014 and it is the most recently constructed botanical garden in Sri Lanka.

After exploring the garden, visit the Seethawaka Museum. A new museum has been established to facilitate the exploration of information about the Seethawaka kingdom, which is an important kingdom of the Sri Lankan monarchy.

This museum has been created by renovating an old building owned by the Sri Lanka Railway Department, adjacent to the city of Awissawella, to make it easy for all local and foreign tourists passing through Awissawella.
